Dear friends and comrades,

Farmers' protests, particularly those comprising of smallholding and
middleholding farmers, have been massive in state after state. The farmers'
protests are facing State bullets, arrests and severe clampdown. India has
had a long march to an agrarian dystopia facing us, the scale of which is
astronomical. A scenario of widespread farmers' suicides and massive
dispossession of farmers and agricultural labourers has been caused by a
deep agrarian crisis, reasons behind which are multipronged, and the crisis
has been developed gradually but very systematically through the economic
policy of the State. As the farmers fight back, we will gather on the
evening of April 21st to watch two gripping documentary films on the
subject and have an engaging post-screening discussion for a conversation
on the many questions that haunt us.

*THE DISPOSSESSED / Dir: Mathieu Roy (2017)*

The disastrous environmental impacts of modern agribusiness are no longer
up for debate, but few documentaries have explored the consequences for
workers. An ambitious project, filmed around the world, THE DISPOSSESSED
approaches the global food crisis from the farm worker’s perspective. While
multinationals, blessed with government support, keep developing solutions
supposed to solve the world’s hunger problems, rural folks keep getting
poorer, perpetually pushed toward bankruptcy, displacement, a paradoxical
inability to feed themselves, and even suicide. With enlightening
interviews and keen observations of agricultural work, backed by
exceptional cinematography, THE DISPOSSESSED unpacks the systemic causes of
this tragedy.

On this day, we will screen a 1.5 hour long excerpt, which deals
specifically with the Indian agricultural crisis, from this powerful recent
film.

*COTTON FOR MY SHROUD / Dir: Nandan Saxena & Kavita Bahl (2011)*

Cotton for my Shroud investigates the ongoing farmer suicide crisis in
India and the culpability of the multinational Monsanto and the Indian
government. It examines the strategy of multinational corporations to
control seed supply, and corrupt politicians' willingness to help in this
second colonisation of India.
